This is Sofia, the Arizona student ambassador! I would love to share with you a project I have been working on that truly has incorporated every aspect of STEAM!
Over the past few months, I have been a part of an incredible team, predominantly females, working to create a solar powered go-kart!
We’ve entered our go-kart in the University of Arizona’s “Racing the Sun” competition.
The science, technology, engineering and math we employed in drawing our schematics, figuring out the electrical systems, the steering, propulsion and breaks pushed us beyond what we ever imagined we could do. Then there was also fundraising and project management that was key to getting us to the various key deadlines in the competition. However, my favorite part of all was the design! Aesthetics is such a big deal in our world. Our major purchases in life are often based on design. We created such an unusual cart body that stands out, is sleek, lightweight and such a beautiful piece of functional sculpture. In fact, our team was even nominated to win an innovation award for this unique and artistic design. (We will see in a month who will win this.)
We just made our formal presentation to the judges that showed all of our work along the way. This presentation included design and communication skills as well. Race day is just around the bend. We’ve learned so much and
are looking forward to that finish line!
I recommend trying big projects outside of your normal comfort zone. They can really show you how you can do anything you set your mind to!
